How To Start Motivating Your Children

Sometimes, it’s obviously difficult to get young people to do the household tasks assigned to them. Because your kids are busy participating in sports games, doing homework, spending time online, or talking to friends on their mobile phones, it is often difficult to persuade them to do their assigned household tasks.

The truth of the matter is that not every method of motivation will work with your particular child. Some methods work well for one child but backfire on another!

You may be tempted to be your child’s best friend; however, your duty as a parent is to be a motivator, teacher, and leader first.

Here are some things you can try to do to help motivate your kids to get things done:

1. Give praise.

Kids absolutely love praises. Your children are craving your focus and your praise. They’ll be more apt to do the things that they know are going to earn them praise. You’re the parent here, and they’re hoping that you’re proud of them.

  • You reinforce good behavior when you encourage and praise them.

2. Give a reward.

Children are frequently encouraged when they get a reward. Such a reward doesn’t need to be big or involve cash.

Here are some good rewards for your children:

  • Time spent together with you doing fun activities.
  • Being read aloud to.
  • Time spent together playing games.
  • Down-time watching favorite movies together.

These types of rewards are enjoyable and will motivate your children. If they are really anticipating the outcome, they’ll be more likely to fulfill their responsibilities.

3. Let yourself be the role model.

If your kids witness you doing nothing for the entire day, they will feel that it is all right for them to do the exact same thing. Keep in mind that kids are like sponges who soak up everything that they admire in you.

  • Let your kids see that it’s rewarding to do their chores. For instance, if your child helps you prepare and bake a batch of cookies, a few compliments about how delicious they taste can help to boost your child’s self-esteem.

4. Fearing the consequences.

Consequences and punishment are two very different things. Natural consequences should follow when your children are inattentive to their chores. Their inaction will naturally affect their lives and the lives of those around them.

  • Take something away for a short period of time, and let them know just why you are doing it and how they can earn it back. This can help prepare them for how things sometimes will work out in the “real world” later on.

5. Show that you love them.

The children in your life crave your love and attention. Make sure you’re involved in their lives. Do something with your youngster that he or she is enthusiastic about!

  • Showing your children that you are appreciative of them and respectful of their choices will form a deeper bond between the two of you. When you ask them to do something, they’ll be more inclined to do it due to a mutual respect between you.

It isn’t always an easy matter to motivate your youngsters. It requires dedication and consistency to provide the example and direction necessary to build up a child’s character.

It can be very tempting to give up and do what’s needed yourself, but if you want to help your child grow into a responsible adult, you are more apt to succeed if you stand your ground and come up with another method to get your child up and moving.

As the parent, it is your job to shape your children into caring, responsible, and respectful adults. In addition, remember that children are just human beings who find their motivation in similar ways to what motivates everybody else.

Children need a lot of love, ample attention, fun things to do, special treats when they accomplish their goals, and the listening ears of Mom and Dad. If you provide your children with all of these different needs, they will grow into adults with the capability to achieve their dreams.
