It's Your Time, Entrepreneurs
by Kathi Calahan

With so few companies hiring the millions of us who have been laid off from our jobs, now is the best time ever to think outside the box and start your own business from home.

I thank God that I had both of my home-based businesses when my husband was laid off in October, because he’s still looking for work.

Starting any business from home is best suited to:

  • Independent self starters. When given all the how-to’s, any independent personality can open, market and sustain a business from home if they’ve found the right niche.
  • Those who have the mindset that their business will provide solutions to others with problems. No, you’re not in business just for the money; that never works. Money is the blessing you receive because you have helped others. Let’s face it, your business should provide something that a buyer wants and you have. This could be information, such as a how-to E-Book, or a product, such as hand made jewelry, or advice, such as consulting in fields where you’ve previously worked, or a service, such as elder day care.
  • Those who already have, or are willing to take a crash course in computer literacy. In this day and age you must have some computer skills in order to run a good business from home. If you do not have or want to learn these skills, the alternative is to pay someone to do your computer tasks for you.
  • An at home business is perfect for stay at home moms because they can run their business around the schedule of their family. Sometimes, depending on your work salary, it just doesn’t pay to go out to work and pay for child care because there just isn’t enough money left at the end of the month. This is a win/win situation; the children get more of you, you get more of them and you have fun running a business that fits your interests and skills.
  • Many retired people are finding that if they could just get a little extra money to see them through their bills that they would finally enjoy retirement. Some have taken their computers and their business on the road and travel while running their company. A home based company can even be run from the inside of a motor home. In fact, if you love to travel, why not operate a travel business while you’re on the road, by writing articles, giving destination advice and even motor home how-to’s. Here’s the perfect opportunity to write E-Books.
  • People who love people, but are pretty much housebound due to a handicap? Why not open a bed and breakfast, specifically for those with special needs? You probably already have the household accommodations they would need and this type of business would allow you to have lots of fun and interesting conversations with people from around the world.

There are so many exciting businesses just waiting for you to discover them. My mom used to say, “When you get lemons (like being laid off from work) you might as well make lemonade.” Remember, it’s your time! Here’s to your “start any business” from home” success!
