Griffith Observatory - To Infinity and Beyond

The Griffith Observatory, a popular tourist attraction, rests majestically like a sovereign hacienda on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles, California, where it commands a view of the 35 mile-long Los Angeles Basin; a picturesque cityscape, featuring LA's central business district; the hustle and bustle of historic Hollywood; and the serenity of the Pacific Ocean, the largest of Earth's oceanic divisions.

It is at this “eyeball to the universe” where more human beings than any other location on this third planet from the Sun have had the opportunity to witness the 1986 apparition of Halley's comet; the 1994 scars inflicted on Jupiter by comet Shoemaker-Levy 9; the spectacular comet Hale-Bopp in 1995; and Hyakutake, the 1996 stealth comet.

Susie Kay has been scoring three-pointer baskets with inner-city students of the Washington, D.C., area since 1996 and hundreds of students have benefited. As founder of the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Foundation, Ms. Kay has formed a lasting partnership between community, businesses and students by matching students with mentors. What once seemed like a faded dream for many students in Washington, D.C. has now become a reality. Many of them are the first in their families to attend college.

The mission of Hoop Dreams is to empower and to give hope to many of the inner-city youth of the Washington, D.C. area, offering opportunities to build a solid foundation for life. Skills development, resources, and mentorships are all part of the foundation that supports academic achievements, healthy development and success. However, Hoop Dreams is about much more than scholarships. It’s about family. The volunteers, mentors and staff have all formed a tight bond with the students.

“As a community, it’s our responsibility to engage in the life of these students,” says Susie, and the students come to her for inspiration. www.hoopdreams.org.
