Mompreneur Inspires Others to Start
Debra Cohen likes to call herself a “momprenerur,” because she is the president of Home Remedies of NY, Inc., as well as the creator of the Homeowner Referral Network (HRN) business model.
Debra started Home Remedies in 1997 to provide a local network for homeowners who were seeking reliable, pre-screened, home improvement professionals. The service is free to homeowners because the contractors who work under Home Remedies pay a pre-negotiated commission for referrals. While forming the business, she wrote The Complete Guide to Owning and Operating a Successful Homeowner Referral Network.
Home Remedies has served thousands of homeowners in the South Shore area of Nassau County, New York. Debra currently manages a team of more than 50 contractors ranging from plumbers and painters, to electricians and carpenters to electricians, and much more. There are currently over 400 HRN operating, making it a national cottage industry.
Many publications have featured Debra and HRN, including Entrepreneur, Good Housekeeping, Working Mother and The New York Times magazines. She has also appeared on iVillage Live, American Baby and CNN, among other shows as a home-based business expert.
