10 Motivational Quotes to Inspire Anyone Starting a New Business
How do you motivate yourself? Where do you draw the added incentive necessary to keep moving forward with your goals? Sometimes, a good old fashioned post-it note on the bathroom mirror can be all the ‘push’ you need. A little quote to start your day, can keep you moving in the right direction. Here is a fast and dirty list of ten quotes that will pump you up, when you need it.
“Chase the vision, not the money; the money will end up following you.”1 –Tony Hsieh, Zappos CEO
Sure, the money is nice, but it can’t be the only carrot, dangling. Keep in mind to stay focused on your vision. When your reason for waking everyday is rooted in your dream and making it happen, it makes climbing out of bed a little easier. Of course, no one wants to work for free, but let your vision guide you and the money will find you.
“Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”2 – Gloria Steinem
As an entrepreneur, venturing out on your own, you know all about leaping. You’ve already decided to make a huge leap into the unknown, by starting your own business. You’ve likely spent years dreaming and planning, and now you’re experiencing life at the other end of that rainbow. Regardless of where you are in the planning or doing stage, be sure to always save time for your dreams. Your dreams have taken you this far, don’t give up on them now.
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change”3. – Brene Brown
Vulnerability is not a place that one would choose to visit, yet, sometimes we end up there. It is there, in our weakest, that we can truly find what we’re made of. Often, at our most vulnerable, we discover the secrets of success. As a business owner, you’ve likely spent some serious time building your armor as well as your business. If you do find yourself in a vulnerable state, embrace it, and use it as a lesson to grow.
“The best revenge is massive success.”4– Frank Sinatra
While we don’t recommend you keeping a detailed list of those who told you would never make it, it is nice to remember those who once doubted you. The good news is, you’ll never have to go back and find them to let them know they were wrong. You can, merely, let your success and ultimate happiness do that for you. As an added bonus, you can thank your doubters. Sometimes, they are just the motivation that we need to succeed.
“If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat! Just get on.”5 -Sheryl Sandberg
Seriously, when presented with an opportunity, the planner in you may be tempted to want to load up on all the details. You may think that a concrete analysis of logistics is the way to go. And, sometimes, you might be right. But, more often than not, it’s your best bet to jump first, and ask questions later. When an amazing opportunity presents itself, sometimes you have to just take it.
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”6 -Steve Jobs
Who can argue with Steve Jobs’ logic? This man knew where he was headed, long before the road had been paved. Trusting in each step, believing you are exactly where you’re meant to be, and staying positive, all seem to be patterns that have worked for others. This trusted logic is worth considering. Often times in business, decisions and situations make much more sense once they’re behind us. As Jobs says, trust in “your gut, destiny, life [or]…karma”, and be sure to keep on plugging.
“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life–think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”7 -Swami Vivekananda
You’ve likely heard the old adage, ‘what you think about, you bring about.’ It’s true. Knowing this, why would you waste your precious thoughts on negative emotions and fears of failure? When we focus our energy on positive thoughts and dreams of success, we can’t help but become just that. Even entrepreneurs need reminders to stay the course, and keep their heads up. Become your dream and it will happen.
“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing–that’s why we recommend it daily.”8 -Zig Ziglar
Remember that post-it on the bathroom mirror? You’ll need to hang a new one each day. Some days require a little more motivation than others. Also, the glue only holds for so long. Every day presents new challenges and doubts, motivation in daily doses can ensure that those negative thoughts don’t have a chance to seep in.
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs — ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”9 – Howard Thurman
When choosing your course for entrepreneurship, were you tempted to create the next big thing? It likely didn’t come to fruition because your motivation was off. Your reason for doing it wasn’t right. When you choose to do something that makes your heart sing, things seem to fall into place, naturally. It may not happen fast, but when it happens, you know it’s the right thing.
“You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”10 – Robin Williams
Some might argue that Robin Williams was given more than a little spark of madness. We’ve all known someone in our lives who seems to have more spark than others. This can make us feel like we have no spark at all. Everyone has a talent, a spark, an inner calling, a little madness. Unlocking the door to what will bring it out, is something people spend years doing. When you unleash it, you unlock your true potential.
As an entrepreneur, you’ll find motivation in many places. When you discover what works and keeps you going, everyday, make sure to keep that in front of you. Choose your favorite quote and type it into your alarm clock message on your smartphone, or scribble it on an old-fashioned post it note on your bathroom mirror.
